Meadville Lombard Theological School, a Unitarian Universalist seminary in Chicago, announced the establishment of a new endowed merit-based scholarship that will start in the fall of 2008. The scholarship, which will cover tuition for a full-time student for four years, comes from a $300,000 gift made by trustee Arnold Bradburd and his wife Julia Bradburd.

Meadville Lombard President Lee Barker said that the Bradburds were motivated by “their passion for Unitarian Universalism and its ability to change lives, as it has theirs, their understanding of the importance of ministry in shaping Unitarian Universalism, and their desire to inspire others to make similar gifts.” Arnold Bradburd has been a Meadville Lombard trustee for six years.

The Bradburd scholarship follows the establishment of the Spencer and Susan Lavan Scholarship for Excellence last year at Meadville Lombard. “Our goal is to establish a number of merit scholarships to attract the best and the brightest to study Unitarian Universalism,” said Barker.

The school’s board recently completed a yearlong study of ways that the school could best carry out its mission, and achieve excellence and economic vitality. Called “Going Forward,” the study’s goals include increasing enrollment, attracting top students and faculty, and reviewing the school’s website. One goal of the plan, to create a provost’s position, has already been achieved through the appointment of Sharon Welch, who will start this fall. Barker said that the school intended to develop itself as a Unitarian Universalist resource for a broad array of people ranging from lay people to doctoral students.

Meadville Lombard and Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, Calif., are the two avowedly Unitarian Universalist theological schools, but a growing number of Unitarian Universalist students are enrolled at theological schools affiliated with other denominations or universities.
