A Guest of the World: Meditations. Jeffrey Lockwood. Skinner House, 2006; $8. Brief, insightful essays on nature. Lockwood, a professor of natural science and the humanities at the University of Wyoming and member of the UU Fellowship of Laramie, is the author of three books that have brought him growing recognition as a nature writer.

Christian Voices in Unitarian Universalism: Contemporary Essays. Ed. by Kathleen Rolenz. Skinner House, 2006; $14. Personal essays by eight Unitarian Universalist ministers and seven laypeople convey the breadth and depth of contemporary UU Christian faith. Includes a reading list for further study. The Rev. Kathleen Rolenz, editor of the collection, also edits the newsletter of the UU Christian Fellowship (uuchristian.org).

We Pledge Our Hearts: A Treasury of Poems, Quotations, and Readings to Celebrate Love and Marriage. Ed. by Edward Searl. Skinner House, 2006; $15. The Rev. Edward Searl has collected passages from around the world celebrating love and marriage not just for the wedding day, but for anniversaries and less obvious milestones, too. His earlier volumes collect readings for childbirth and death.

‘Thank You for Submitting Your Proposal’: A Foundation Director Reveals What Happens Next. By Martin Teitel. Emerson & Church, 2006; $24.95. Foundation grants are the lifeblood of many nonprofits, but Martin Teitel—a foundation director for nearly thirty years—says grants don’t always go to the most deserving applicants. His book helps grant applicants who can’t afford to hire a consultant understand what foundations are looking for. Teitel is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, Massachusetts.

Club Meds. By Katherine Hall Page. Simon Pulse, 2006; $6.99. A young adult novel about three high school students who improvise when a bully takes one boy’s Ritalin. The author, a member of King’s Chapel in Boston, has written a popular series of mystery novels; this is her first young adult novel.

Catchy, musically sophisticated children’s songs based on folk tales from around the world, performed on diverse instruments. Singer and fiddler Donna Stjerna is a member of the Church of the Larger Fellowship. She and Mulhollan also perform as Still on the Hill. (toucanjam.net)
