“I took this photo in Montclair, New Jersey, during an early morning walk with my dog Bean,” writes Shane Paul Neil.

“Montclair is a city carved from what was once mountain forests. This photo is a reminder that one of the biggest effects of what we call progress is displacement. Our architecture, technology, and modern culture as a whole exist as a result of pushing preexisting entities like plants and animals to the fringes while aggressively consuming resources. And lest we forget, before it was Montclair it was home to the Lenape long before. The shadow cast upon this small building is a reminder of the debt we accrue in the name of advancement and the understanding that the debt is past due.”
