The new UU Common Read, On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World by Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg (Beacon Press, 2022), offers a fresh perspective on how we make ourselves accountable to others.
The book invites us to explore a process, informed by Jewish tradition, that can help us take actions for meaningful atonement in our personal, community, and national lives.
This UU Common Read offers a glimpse into one of our faith’s foundational sources as we follow Ruttenberg into the framework for making amends offered by the twelfth-century Jewish physician and scholar, Maimonides. Ruttenberg points us toward modern day practices of repentance that can really make a difference.
The discussion guide available now for On Repentance and Repair offers UU Common Read groups two 75-minute sessions. Recommended as a two-part, online series, this guide can also support a half-day workshop in person or online. Two additional Common Read sessions and a recorded conversation between the book’s author and several Unitarian Universalist activists and theologians will be available in late 2023.
All resources for the UU Common Read are published on the UUA website and can be found, along with Common Read updates, at uua.org/read.
UU Common Read gatherings are designed to take place online with a UU religious professional or lay leader facilitating. They easily work as in-person gatherings, as well.
