The amount of $277,402 has been approved by the Unitarian Universalist Association-UU Service Committee Gulf Coast Relief Funding Panel to support the three New Orleans UU congregations for another year.

At its meeting October 13, the panel approved $114,610 for staff positions at First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans, $94,833 for staff at North Shore Unitarian Universalist Society in Lacombe, La., and $67,959 for staff at Community Church Unitarian Universalist.

In each case the amount covers 85 percent of the minister’s compensation package and 97 percent of other staff salaries for FY07, beginning Oct. 1, 2006. The churches will pay the balance. Community Church will pay the full amount for its administrator, a volunteer position before Hurricane Katrina, and now a paid position.

The buildings of all three congregations were heavily damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which struck August 29, 2005, and Sept. 24, 2005, respectively. North Shore is the only one of the three that has full use of its building.

The disbursements from the Gulf Coast fund are part of the more than $3.5 million that was raised after the hurricanes. About half has now been spent.
