The Chicago Tribune first reported the news about Bland’s death, which Waller County authorities said was suicide by hanging. The story quickly spread on Twitter and Facebook as friends and family vehemently challenged police accounts.
Bland had traveled from Illinois to Texas for a job interview at Prairie View A&M University, her alma mater. Her family told ABC 7 News that Bland got the job and was going to start working at the university on July 15.
Unitarian Universalists have been among those lamenting Bland’s death and a video of her arrest, during which Bland can be heard saying to police, “You just slammed my head into the ground. Do you not even care about that?”
