Unitarian Universalist congregations across the country, including at least five in the state of Maine, held vigils following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election. Many ministers offered reflections, words of support, prayers, and a recommitment to justice as members expressed fear about what the results will mean for the rights of LGBTQ people, immigrants, Muslims, and others. “People have concerns about xenophobia, racism, and [Trump's] bullying attitude and sexual objectification of women. These are the opposite of our values and so people are feeling heartbroken,” said the Rev. Myke Johnson of Allen Avenue UU Church of Portland, Maine. The Portland vigil was attended by about 90 people. (Bangor Daily News - 11.11.16)

UU clergy, UUA president join pipeline protest

More than 50 Unitarian Universalist ministers joined more than 500 clergy to protest the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, answering the call for solidarity, prayer, and action with the Standing Rock Sioux Nation and the water protectors. Nearly two dozen clergy came from Massachusetts alone, mostly mainline Protestant and UUs, including the Rev. Peter Morales, president of the UUA. Ministers who attended continue to reflect on their experiences as media outlets cover the ongoing protests. (Boston Globe - 11.4.16)
