As part of an article highlighting actions taken by religious organizations and leaders in response to the Trump administration’s ban on refugees from Muslim countries, ThinkProgress senior religion reporter Jack Jenkins mentions the joint statement from the Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Hon. Thomas Andrews, president and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee:
In the face of looming threats to immigrants, Muslims, people of color, and the LGBTQ community and the rise of hate speech, harassment and hate crimes, we affirm our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every person. We will oppose any and all unjust government actions to deport, register, discriminate, or despoil. As people of conscience, we declare our commitment to translate our values into action as we stand on the side of love with the most vulnerable among us.
The joint statement was also mentioned in a similar article by The Huffington Post.
The Religion News Service quoted the Rev. Victoria Safford, lead minister at White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, in response to the Trump administration:
We stand in a long tradition of radical hospitality. From the underground railroad to this very day, we have welcomed the stranger, sheltered the refugee, offered safe home, resisted racism, fear and exclusion. We will not be silent if families are torn apart, children terrified, parents detained. We are not accomplices to hate or reactionary fear. Our calling is to love and justice and faithful resistance. We will open our hearts, we will open our doors, to those who face the threat of deportation. All are welcome, period.
