Members of North Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Andover, Massachusetts, held a vigil in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Despite the sadness of the senseless loss of life, several attendees said that they feel hopeful for a change in gun laws because of the impressive leadership of the Parkland students. Hundreds of people came together in Vero Beach, Florida, to demand new gun control legislation from leaders in Tallahassee and nationally. The Rev. Scott Alexander of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach spoke at the rally and called for sensible gun controls. “Everyone is just heartsick over what happened in Parkland last week,” said Alexander. New leadership at church-state separation group
Rachel Laser is the new executive director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, an advocacy group that seeks to maintain the boundaries between religion and government. Among her many qualifications is a reputation as a fighter, which the organization feels is vital in the current political climate. The Rev. Neal Jones, Unitarian Universalist minister and head of the board at American’s United, observed: “In my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve experienced such an overall assault on the freedom of religion and conscience as I have since the election of Donald Trump.” (Washington Post - 2.21.18)
